Electro Chaabi
Ägypten, 2013 Sprache: Arabisch mit englischen Untertiteln |
Cairo's wedding festival music is made over in a hyper collision of hip-hop, electro, and folk called "mahraganat," which flourishes across social classes following the revolution.
On the margins of the cultural revolution that swept over Egypt, in the poorest neighborhoods of Cairo, an electrifying version of Arab hip hop has evolved out of the popular music known as chaabi. Mahraganat, Arabic for "festivals," is a raucous and addictive blend of traditional music and rap, set against a furious cascade of drums, bass, and electronic vocals. The singing is fast, often improvised, and the subjects range from hashish, sex, and friendship to poverty and political betrayal. In a country where 50% of Egyptians are under the age of 25, and at a time of major social upheaval, mahraganat has become a phenomenon.
Director Hind Meddeb profiles the young men behind the music-Sadat, Oka & Ortega, Weza, Fig, Chipsy, and Amra Haha-and the impact of their sound on their country as well as on their own lives.

Return to Homs
Syrien/Deutschland, 2013 Sprache: Arabisch mit englischen Untertiteln |
The movie is about the Syrian citizen who challenged everything and everyone to demand freedom. It’s a movie about war and the pressure of being in a battlefield.
From 2011 to 2013, filmmaker Talal Derki followed the journey of two close friends whose lives had been upended by the battle raging in Syria. Nineteen-year-old Basset is a local soccer star—the goalkeeper for the Syrian national team. He has also become an iconic singer in the revolution. His songs reflect his dreams of a peaceful liberation from Assad’s brutal regime. Ossama is a 24-year-old media activist and pacifist who wields his camera to capture the revolution. When the army cracks down and their beloved city of Homs becomes a bombed-out ghost town, these two peaceful protesters finally take up arms and transform into rebel insurgents.
